The brief for this project was to provide full mechanical services as part of a refurbishment to an existing building for a national service centre. The building incorporated office areas, testing labs, a large workshop, a large warehouse and an outlet store. The existing building was empty and in a very poor condition.
The building itself was a significant challenge because of the structure and layout meaning that the the co-ordination and routing of all services was difficult. The heating of the warehouse and workshop also was a challenge as they both had to be maintained at different temperatures. There was also large amount of work being completed in eight different zones in a short programme so site conditions were challenging.
Careful consideration was taking in the design project prior to starting on site which was invaluable but also we had to be very flexible and change designs when on site to suit the building structure and changing client requirements. A gas fired indirect air heater was utilised with sensors and a control system to enable us to achieve different temperatures in the two areas. The size of the site meant that we could have a large amount of engineers working in the different areas at once. All works were completed ahead of programme and under budget with an excellent, functional final result.
